Communities of the Future

THURSDAY 1 OCTOBER

How can we create volunteer communities that young people actually choose?

  • Thursday 1 October

National volunteer surveys from institutions such as the Danish Institute for Cultural Analysis and VIVE show that young people who engage in volunteer communities often experience higher well-being, stronger social skills, and a greater sense of societal connection than those who do not volunteer. At the same time, the studies indicate that young volunteers, more than older ones, tend to prefer shorter-term roles focused on a specific cause rather than lifelong memberships.

With the project Attractive Volunteer Communities, Roskilde Festival and the Municipality of Roskilde have explored how to engage young people from diverse backgrounds as volunteers – and how to sustain that engagement over time. We believe there is significant untapped potential in cultural volunteering as a space for learning and meaningful communities.

In this panel discussion, we will share insights and lessons from the project, along with professional perspectives that can hopefully be translated into practice and inspire others working with youth engagement.
